Green Lakes State Park is a popular park in the Syracuse, NY area. Encompassing over 1,875 acres, 20 miles of hiking trails, a nature center, waterfront for swimming and boating, campgrounds, cabins, and a golf course.
The most interesting aspect of the park is the "color" of it's two lakes. The lakes appear to glow green, but in actuality the water is crystal clear. The park takes its name from two glacial lakes (Round and Green Lake), which get their distinctive color from a combination of deep, clear water and calcium carbonate from limestone bedrock.
Both Round and Green Lakes are meromictic lakes, which means that there is no fall and spring mixing of surface and bottom waters. Such lakes have a high potential for evidence of ancient plant and animal life.
